November Novena

November Novena
November is the month when Catholics traditionally remember loved ones who
have died and offer services and support to those who have been bereaved.
This November, we are particularly aware of the millions of people who have died
from Covid-19 and those whose bereavements have been particularly painful since
they were unable to be with their loved one when they died.
The Novena can be prayed at any time during November but might be especially
appropriate this year leading up to the Feast of Christ the King when we have the
Gospel in which Jesus says to those who have lived good lives: ‘Come, you whom
my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since
the foundation of the world’. We know that few of us die ready to hear those words
– but, equally, few of us have done enough evil to hear Christ tell us to go away. Most
of us will continue our journey towards perfection – sustained by the prayers of all
the saints (canonised and un-canonised) and those we have left behind whose love
extends beyond death.
Our prayer, then, is that those who have died with be borne on the wings of our
prayers to the moment when they are ready to enter fully into their eternal home.
In the Novena, we have included War dead as the first intention as November also
includes Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. If you are praying the Novena
and 11 November is within your dates, we suggest that you use this intention then
and adjust the others as appropriate. Alternatively, you may wish to pray the Novena
leading up to Christ the King and dates have been given for that.
This Novena was prepared by members of the Spirituality Committee on behalf of
the Liturgy Office.

****Lockdown 2: Church to close for Public Services****

Following the announcement on 31st October by Boris Johnson, It is with much regret that we have to announce that all public services will be suspended at St Oswald’s from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December 2020. Therefore there will be no masses during the week and at weekends between these two dates.

The church will however still be open for private prayer on weekdays (Monday to Friday) from 10.00am to 12.00 midday with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Mass will continue to be recorded each weekend to view throughout this period, and be posted on our YouTube channel, a link to which will be posted on the website and Facebook pages each week.

We pray that the enforced Lockdown will save lives and the rules relaxed again early December, allowing public services to recommence.

Synod Update Autumn 2020

Synod 2021
Following the Archbishop’s Pastoral Letter about the next phase of the Archdiocesan Synod, copies of the
Synod proposals for each of the themes will be attached to the newsletter over the next three weeks.
This week the theme is: ‘Sharing the Mission of Jesus’ Each theme has a number of headings with an
‘affirmation’ and a series of proposals.
At the beginning of December, our Synod members will be asked to indicate which of those affirmations
and proposals they consider should go forward for discussion at the Synod next year. To assist them in this
task, you are asked to take the proposals home with you for consideration, and to indicate for each theme
2 affirmations and 5 proposals which you believe should be the subject of the Synod discussions.
Each week there will basket at the back of Church for you to place your suggestions.
